The rise

of

remote Work

IT ALL BEGINS WITH AN IDEA

IT ALL BEGINS WITH AN IDEA ✦

how it began

Jack Nilles, a NASA engineer, laid the foundation for modern remote working when he coined the term “telecommuting” in 1973.

Remote workers rose to 2,000 by 1983.

It’s all thanks to technology and the exposure to hashtags like #DigitalNomad and #WorkFromAnywhere on social media.

Employee well-being and Mental Health

Surprisingly, global employee (onsite worker) well-being declined after 2023. While remote work has been around for more than 40 years, global employees’ life evaluations measure an increase in daily stress and daily loneliness to be climbing from 2018-2022. According to Gallup research, 52% of employees say they are watching for or actively seeking a new job. More than half of the world’s employees were watching for or actively seeking a new job in 2023.

Globally, remote and hybrid workers have continuously shown higher levels of engagement than onsite workers, as shown by Gallup statistics, which is correlated with higher performance and productivity.

Remote work helps people live better lives with their definition of balance. They can spend more time with their loved ones while working from home. They can personalize the workplace as they desire. Big pros are safety and avoid traffic in rush hour.

Productivity &

01

How remote work affects productivity

Statistically, remote work brings productivity 10% lower than onsite work, on average. But since it is cheaper: it cuts space needs; and enables hiring from anywhere.

Generally speaking, hybrid work seems to have a better net effect on productivity and may be the best for most people nowadays.

COmmunication, collaborATION, and isolation

Communication: the development of internet and technology make it possible and convenient than ever before. On the other hand, relationships between coworkers are made differently. If a 9-5 work isn’t the environment that keeps people engaged, communication through social media or remote work would be a new way for people to interact.

Collaboration: People with similar work styles or qualities can now more easily connect with each other on social media or collaborative platforms. Employers and employees have a wider pool from which to choose when hiring or looking for work because remote work is now designed to accommodate time constraints or workers from outside the nation.

Isolation: Lack of social interaction and work-life boundaries can be a real struggle for remote workers. The absence of in-person connections can affect mental health, leading to increased stress and a sense of loneliness. Furthermore, remote workers may form unclear boundaries between work and personal life, which can exacerbate feelings of isolation.

Future of Remote work.

TikTok, YouTube, and many other platforms are gaining more and more people to make a living by. According to reports from top influencers, TikTok pays around $0.02 and $0.04 for every 1,000 views, and TikTok has over 106,000 influencers. YouTube pays between $5 and $15 for every 1,000 views you get. According to Social Blade’s latest data, there are approximately 63.8 million YouTube creators. All of this to say, working from home is gradually becoming a trend.

For those that need to be onsite or maybe hybrid: Employees said that they find the company cares about their well-being, engage better. And it doesn’t matter if the company said they care for their employees, it’s actually how the employees feel.
